Adventures and fun aside, it is important that your Overlanding and camping journeys are safe and you get to enjoy your best time off.
One of the most overlooked aspects of pop-up camper off-roading is the tire pressure. One that most owners ignore or don’t even know a little about.
Just like your truck or SUV, your pop-up camper needs to have properly inflated tires. We’ll talk about its importance in detail later on!
Let’s understand what the tire pressure in a pop-up camper depends on, how you can check the exact tire pressure, and shed some light on important pop-up camper tire safety aspects.
What is the Ideal Pop-Up Camper Tire Pressure?
There’s no standard tire pressure for pop-up campers, as they come in different sizes, weightage, and equipment. Tire pressure majorly depends on the weight of the pop-up camper and the average ranges between 1,500 to 4,500 lbs. The average tire pressure of pop-up campers is 35-55 PSI.
If you want to know the exact tire pressure of your pop-up camper, look for a label on the inside of the door panels. If you can’t find one, explore your owner’s manual or consult the manufacturer for details.
Small Sized Campers

The standard weight of a small-sized pop-up camper = 1000 kg
Tire Specifications: 205 / 65 R 15 94 H with Maximum Inflation Pressure 60 PSI
Inflation factor (Max tire pressure divided by load rating) = 60/635 = 0.09448
The correct pressure is measured by multiplying this factor by half the pop-up camper’s weight.
0.09448 x (1000 / 2) = 47.2 PSI (inflation factor x half the weight of the caravan)
So, the optimal tire pressure for a small-sized pop-camper is 47 PSI.
Medium Sized Campers

The standard weight of a small-sized pop-up camper = 2,200 kg
Tire Specifications: 205 / 65 R 15 94 H with Maximum Inflation Pressure 60 PSI
Inflation factor (Max tire pressure divided by load rating) = 65/1,000 = 0.065
The correct pressure is measured by multiplying this factor by half the pop-up camper’s weight.
0.065 x (1100 / 2) = 35.4 PSI (inflation factor x half the weight of the caravan)
So, the optimal tire pressure for a small-sized pop-camper is 35 PSI.
Large Sized Campers

The standard weight of a small-sized pop-up camper = 3,500 kg
Tire Specifications: 205 / 65 R 15 94 H with Maximum Inflation Pressure 75 PSI
Inflation factor (Max tire pressure divided by load rating) = 75/1,600 = 0.04687
The correct pressure is measured by multiplying this factor by half the pop-up camper’s weight.
0.04687 x (1600 / 2) = 37.2 PSI (inflation factor x half the weight of the caravan)
So, the optimal tire pressure for a large-sized pop-camper is 37 PSI.
As a general rule, a hot tire will often have an inflation pressure that is 4 PSI higher than a cold tire. If the pressure in your tires is more than 4 PSI greater when you examine them while they are hot, the cold inflation pressure was too low. The cold pressure was too high if there is less than a 4-PSI difference between the hot inflation pressure and the cold inflation pressure.

What Does Pop-up Camper Tire Pressure Depend on?
What to get the tire pressure right on your camper? Different factors play a role in defining the pressure and you must consider them before departing on your next journey. Let’s take a look at those;
Weight of the Camper
The most important thing to consider is the weight of the camper. The heavier the camper you’re towing, your tires need to bear the weight with the air pressure.
The camper’s weight also depends on the frame, accessories, and how much luggage you stuff in there. If your tires are inadequately inflated, it could become problematic, particularly at higher speeds.
Road Conditions
This is another important factor that defines the tire pressure of a pop-up camper. When traveling on a highway, you ought to keep the pressure on the higher side and reduce it accordingly when going off-road.
Keeping a portable tire pressure gauge is ideal and must be a part of your luggage.
Weather
If planning to take a stroll in the summer, you ought to keep the tire pressure optimized in your pop-up camper. When it is hot outside, the tire pressure should be on the lower side to make up for expanded gases inside the tire and keep it from bursting.
On the other hand, tire pressure should be kept up in winter and checked regularly.
Load Bearing Capacity
This is very obvious and no matter what anyone tells you, you must note the maximum load-bearing capacity of your camper’s tires and try to remain within the limits.
Exceeding the limit with luggage and other equipment can really put you and others in danger.
Tire Condition
The sidewalls, treads, and overall condition of the tires must also be considered while inflating the tires. Camper’s tires bear the grunt of the tough terrains and off-road trails, so expect them to get damaged and worn earlier than your other cars.
Putting too much pressure by over-inflating can prove to be fatal and must be kept in mind at all times.
Finding the Right Tire Pressure
There are different ways you could find the optimal tire pressure of your pop-up camper;
Pressure Label
Look for a label that reads the optimal tire pressure for both the front and rear tires. It is usually located inside the driver-side door panel or near the rear end of the storage.
This is the tire pressure recommended for the OEM tires that came with your camper. If you recently changed the tires on your camper, you should check with your dealer.
Tire Sidewall
You could also check the side wall on one of your pop-up camper’s tires to confirm the exact pressure. This is usually the maximum load capacity, which defines the limits of your tires and not necessarily what you should be inflating your tires to, in routine.
Owner’s Manual
If you are unable to locate the pressure label or the readings have faded over time, it is best to consult your owner’s manual and look for precise readings.
The majority of these documents contain all the necessary data, including the tire pressure for the pop-up campers, and should help you with inflating your tires properly.
Manufacturer
When everything else fails to answer, it’s time to revert to your manufacturer and ask for optimal tire pressure and overall care. This might just be your best bet at getting all the necessary information and guidance that you’d ever need for properly using and maintaining your pop-up camper.
How to Choose Tires for Pop-Up Campers and Trailers?

Choosing the right type of tire for a car is totally different from buying one for a pop-up camper or trailer. You have to be very careful about the material, loading, and weightage
When looking for a set of tires, you must look for the letters “ST” which are inscribed on the sidewalls of tires specifically made for trailer use. ST stands for special trailers and these tires are sturdier than the usual road-going products that we often use. Because of their unique design, they are capable of supporting the vertical load much better.
Pop-Up Camper Tire Safety Tips
- Proper Inflation – under or over-inflation can put excessive pressure on the tires, causing accelerated damage, wear, burst tires, and instability on the road. Always keep a compressor in your car for keeping the tires optimally inflated.
- Checking Sidewalls and Treads – Damaged sidewalls and worn treads are indicators of incoming catastrophes. It’s better to change your tires if you notice any worn-out pattern on the tires.
- Storage Care – If you’re not planning to use your camper for a while, it is ideal to clean and dress the tires and cover them in a weatherproof material.
- Changing on Time – This is important for your on-road safety and changing the tires on time ensures a stable drive and longevity of your camper.
- Nitrogen – Nitrogen is a thermally stable gas and protects your tires from bursting or getting damaged, irrespective of the mercury’s level out there.
